BIOGRAPHY

Imani Bilál (b. 1983) is a contemporary abstract painter born in New York City and based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Working primarily with acrylic and ink, her practice is centered on large-scale abstract painting, distinguished by richly layered surfaces, dynamic movement, and an interplay of structure and fluidity..
Her practice is rooted in a physical engagement with painting, where the whole body participates in the development of the work. Through an evolving process of accumulation, removal, and revision, Bilál builds complex surfaces in which earlier layers remain present beneath later ones. She also incorporates found objects and collected elements, bringing together personal remnants and objects selected for their texture and form. In select works, Kufic script and other symbolism introduce additional cultural and visual references.
Drawing on memory, spirituality, identity, and the human condition, Bilál explores the relationship between individual experience and the larger forces that shape our understanding of ourselves and one another. Her paintings hold a tension between the deliberate and the unexpected, the personal and the collective.
Bilál has exhibited internationally, presenting her paintings to audiences across a range of artistic and cultural contexts. Her work is held in significant private and corporate collections, and has been featured in Forbes, where she was described as “a force to be reckoned with.” Her career also includes major international art commissions, further extending the reach of her work beyond the gallery setting.
