About Imani Bilál
Imani Bilal (b. 1983) is a contemporary abstract painter and poet born in NYC, and based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her practice is deeply inspired by the human condition and informed by her spiritual (Islamic) worldview, where the concept of Tawheed (oneness) guides her exploration of chaos, calm, and the interconnectedness of all things.
Her work is recognized for its dynamic interplay of texture, movement, and color, creating compositions that feel both fluid and architectural. Each piece is approached as a meditative practice, balancing spontaneity with precision to evoke emotional depth and a sense of connection.
Her career bridges both the gallery sphere and site-specific commissions. In 2020, her first solo exhibition in New York City, Fingerprints of Ruh, curated by Nemo Librizzi, drew acclaim and led to gallery representation with Chase Contemporary in SoHo and East Hampton, NY. She has been deemed “a force to be reckoned with” by Forbes magazine, and her work is now carried in multiple galleries across the United States.
Bilal also brings extensive experience to the hospitality and commercial sector. Most notably, she created more than 200 works for Vivienda Hotel, a villa themed property in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This landmark project established her as one of the first African American women to helm the complete art vision for a luxury property in the region. She has since partnered with designers and developers to seamlessly integrate art into architecture, elevate guest experiences, and enhance the cultural identity of each space.
Her dual focus, advancing the avant-garde within galleries while producing transformative art experiences for luxury spaces, positions her uniquely at the intersection of fine art and design. Through abstraction, she creates environments that resonate emotionally, enrich communities, and bring lasting value to collectors, institutions, and hospitality brands alike.
