IMANI BILÁL
01 about
Imani Bilal (b. 1983) is a contemporary abstract painter and poet born in New York City and based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her practice is deeply inspired by the human condition and guided by a spiritual worldview centered on the concept of Tawheed (Oneness), informing her exploration of chaos, calm, and the interconnectedness of all things. Through abstraction, Bilal resists the long-held expectation that Black artistic expression must remain tethered to figuration, to bodies, or to prescribed narratives. Instead, her work opens space for emotion, memory, and experience to exist beyond the confines of the recognizable.
Her work is characterized by its dynamic interplay of texture, movement, and color, creating compositions that feel both fluid and architectural. Each piece is approached as a meditative practice, balancing intuitive spontaneity with precision to evoke emotional depth and connection. In this way, painting becomes both reflection and record, a language through which Bilal traces story, memory, and the histories that shape us. Described as “a force to be reckoned with” by Forbes, Bilal’s work has been exhibited internationally and is carried in galleries across the United States.

03 spatial works: architectural & hospitality projects
Bilal collaborates with designers and developers on thoughtfully integrated art programs for architectural and commercial environments. Translating the language of abstraction into spatial experience, her work engages architecture and atmosphere, shaping how viewers move through and inhabit a space. These site-responsive projects extend her painting practice into the built environment, creating immersive visual narratives for hospitality, residential, and cultural spaces.
VIVIENDA HOTEL
Imani Bilál’s collaboration with Vivienda Hotel marks a significant intersection of contemporary abstraction and luxury hospitality design. The five-star property in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia features 43 private villas and amenity spaces that thoughtfully engage the region’s cultural heritage through architecture, design, and art.
Designed by Italian architect Michele Arcarese, the interiors combine bespoke furnishings, refined materials, and sculptural lighting to create an immersive environment. Working in collaboration with interior designer Michelle Song, Bilál developed the artistic vision, producing more than 200 works, including original paintings and hand-embellished prints, that shape the visual language of the space and extend her abstract practice into the architectural environment.
Through this project, Bilál became the first African American commissioned to produce a complete body of work for a luxury hotel property in Saudi Arabia, bringing a contemporary perspective to the integration of fine art within hospitality spaces.
Below is a visual documentation of the project, tracing its development from concept to completion.
